Consumer awareness of the power of telemedicine was relatively low pre-COVID-19; one in ten patients in the US had experience of it in October 2019. The pandemic has drastically changed this and could change the patient experience long term.

A core focus of the healthcare industry over the last few decades has been on productivity improvements through the use of technology. This has been seen across the breadth of the sector from drug discovery to patient monitoring to genetic diagnostics.  Telemedicine, that is, the remote diagnosis and treatment of patients by means of telecommunications technology, has been one of the areas long seen as a potential game changer in terms of improving productivity, but whilst usage has been increasing, it has been at relatively slow rates. This has all changed with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
